I noticed everytime I use the boat (1994 Mercruiser 3.0 with Alfa One) I was using about an half inch of lower unit oil from the fill resevoir on the engine, cant see any sighn of a leak even after being parked in the same spot, is this a problem? Also while checking it I noticed a (horizonal fin?)on the top of the lower unit had a chunk coming off and when I grabbed it, it came off in my hand, its about 5 inches long 2 wide at the widest part and is closest to the boat. with the outdrive down its hard to see.Is this a problem? Thanks new to mercruiser and the forum. I have a picture but cant seem to get it an address. let me know if you need me to e-mail it to you

Re: 1994 Mercruiser Alfa One Question

On my 93 Alpha 1 outdrive, I check the oil level in the reservoir on top of the outdrive, not on the engine a you mentioned.. so I am abit confused..
Also you can post a pic by clicking on the "paperclip" icon in the tool bar in the reply page.. then click "choose file.".. then find the pic in your computer and upload it to the reply page..
Like previously posted, you need to fix that broken outdrive before using it anymore..
A big welcome to the forum..

Thanks for the advise, I think pictures should be on here, also my out drive has the plug at the top and has an external fill jug on the engine.

OK.. I did not know they put the reservoir on some models... Have you ran the boat on the trailer with muffs and check the water on the driveway for oil? You can see pretty easy if it is leaking. Another thing to check is the color of the oil in the outdrive.. If it is milky, it leaking water into the reservoir.. As far as your broken outdrive.. maybe an expert will give you advise now that you have the pic's..

Thanks I'll Check the oil and and keep an Eye on the floor. I'm sure this has been breaking off for awhile there were only a couple little shinny spots on the fresh metal. Thanks again for all your help. Ken

If you pull your outdrive off, Ill betcha you will find your missing oil in the bellows. They love to leak at the input shaft right behind the u-joints...

Is this a bad problem? And how hard do you think it will be to fix? Thanks

The broken part is an easy fix. Just needs to be welded back on, grinder down and painted to match. A buddy just went through the same thing. You would never know it was broke.
