Hello All. First time boat owner. (excited) Starting with on old motor. 1974 Evin-rude 70 Triumph. I guess my main Q: is, is there supposed to be water coming out of the mid section holes with the water muffs on? running/ not running, cold/hot? Thinking the water pump may be bad, i dropped down the LU and applied water to the long tube. Still no water out of holes. So then i tried to apply water through the holes them self. water came down from the mid section
but is not coming down the long tube. Possible cracked or broken? I cant pull it out, so it must be attached to something. I have WSM but not much about this is talked about. Thanks for read.

Your motor probably has no telltale. Those two holes are relief ports ... you should see a fine mist from them when running, very little at idle. You're beating a dead horse.

So, then what are the relief ports relieving? This isn't were the water exits after going through eng? Does it go through exhaust instead?

Both, most thru the prop hub.

OK then. Thank you very much wilde1j. I will give the water pump an inspection before going back together, then go test how she runs. Thanks again.

While you have that loer unit off, notice the big exhaust tube inside the mid-housing. The cooling water goes through the powerhead, then is dumped into the space between the inner and outer housings. There it fills up till it reaches about the level of the relief holes, then overflows and goes back down to be discharged. But a portion of it gets blown out the relief holes as a tell tale indicator.

If the big rubber seal at the gearcase level is shot, it won't fill up or overflow. Also, it may be more apt to be blown out the relief holes if the motor were on a boat, in the water, instead of on a hose. There is no exhaust back pressure to relieve on a hose.

Hay thanks F_R. As i am dissecting this engine I can see where that makes since. I put it back together and can see where having the "muffs" on and having it in the water would give diff effects. Thank you also for response.

Awesome timing here! Got the 65 HP '72 Johnson from my Father in Law (not run consistent for 6 yrs.) with very little run time overall. Replaced the leaky fuel lines, cleaned the bowls, changed the plugs... RUNS GREAT! No water in relief holes though. Gotta check the water pump anyway *37 yr old engine* but it'll be nice not to get disturbed by no flow even with the new pump in. Thanks guys!

thanks crewcabz, No i didn't have the 2 wires you are talking about. Though it talk about them in the manual. Said to get about 5 foot of other wire, disconnect wires from eng, tape the 5 foot wire to the ones you just disconnected then drop unit down. this will ease the installation for bringing the wires back up to eng. I am not sure ware those wires go to, but it looks like someone has cut 2 wires off of my eng @ the lower part of the head. I will have to look into that. Good luck.

Cool, thanks. Sorry to hear about butcher'd wires... hacks always tick me off when they get in over their heads and aren't savy enough to get the help required to repair it right. Good luck, stray wires like stray cats seem to multiply at an astonishing rate!
