1992 40 hp johnson tilt assist

i have a 1992 40 hp johnson vj40telenm tiller motor on the tiller handle it has the lever that works the tilt only i have to pull the cover to lift it up is that how it is suppose to work.... or do i have something that needs to be replaced.............. also is there anyway to make it a power tilt... thanks for your help

That is how it is supposed to work. I will be watching this thread as I have a 95- 40hp and would like to convert it to power tilt as well. Best of luck. Rick.

that is a pain in the butt..... i see a plug in the top and bottom of the cyl im going to see what can be done to convert it over..... thanks for your help
