For the second year in a row, i,m in need of replacing my impeller on my 180hp merc out drive. I'M considering installing a 1/2' jabsco pedestal mounted pump, capable of 3600 rpm with a flow rate of 650gph. Can this installation work? if so, can the existing suction line from my outdrive be left in place?
or does it need to be removed?
I am considering mounting it between my flywheel & my altenator.
opinion's will be greatly appriciated before i proceed with this application.

I can understand the desire for an engine mounted pump. Would be just like a Volvo and Bravo drive but how are you planning on driving this pump if its between the alternator at the front of the engine and the flywheel near the rear of the engine.

Why are you having to replace impellers? If you are running huge amount of sand through them, you'll damage impellers in any pump you have. While I understand your desire to make changing impellers easier, it would still be a good idea to know if you could change your operating procedures a little and solve the problem that way.
As far as changing it, change it to a Bravo style engine mounted pump. But the hose from the transom to the pump would have to be changed also. On your system, the water is pumped through that hose. Well, on a Bravo, the water is SUCKED through that hose, and it is a steel reinforced hose, so it doesn't collapse.
