I ahve been on here before with my boat, It has a Mercruiser 140 Hp bolted up to an old 110 outdrive (Merc Ia with ez-shift) anyways just yesterday that motor crapped out on me , something internal not sure what but sounds like a blow piston or similar.

Anyways the rundown is this, I did notice lots of burned up belt in my compartment (also stretched out), but the temp was fine on the engine. The drive it's bolted to was from a 110 hp engine circa 1967, can't remember what the gear ratio is on it and can't find it either however my max WOT was at 3400 rpm, thats 800 rpm lower than it should be. Otherwise all else seemd ok, oil pressure - fine, temp - fine.

What do you guys think? Maybe a misalignment during install?

Anyways the engine is coming out and going back to the machine shop and in the meantime I am going to completely redo my transom and install the proper 140 mounting plate and gimbale and the get a new leg.

The only way you are going to know is to have someone experienced inspect the failed components . . .

However, this:
something internal not sure what but sounds like a blow piston or similar.

Could come from that:
however my max WOT was at 3400 rpm, thats 800 rpm lower than it should be.

If you was only getting 3400 rpm at WOT, then you killed the engine by lugging it.

Alignment takes out couplers, not engines.

That is good to note, what about the stretched belt then? plus all the rubber shavings from the belt?

Possible causes;

Belt overtightened when installed.

Bad pulleys, ie rough, rusted, bent or nicked

One of the belt driven accessories locked up or has tight bearings,

Misalignment of pulleys

Possibly a little

Pulleys are good

All acc's good (alt & pump)

Misaligned, maybe a little

As for the engine, while I was tearing down to pull out and get back to the shop (told me to bring it in, so hopefully under warranty - 12 hours on engine) I removed the fuel pump to see the lever just smashed in, look in the block and we have a con rod busted out.... ican only imagine what has happened to my poor camshaft and crankshaft.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to find out what gear ratio I have on my drive, it is as mentioned before a 1967-8 Merc Ia from a 110Hp. I seem to remember reading somewhere that it was a 1.85:1 which I thought was wierd, anyhow......I have a newer leg picked out, 1976 Merc 120/140.

Nevermind, found a site....not sure if I should post it as it is an online store...

My outdrive says the serial is A53950? only one on the flange, no numbers under the stickers ot on the bottomside of the one side. Any info?
