I have a chance to buy a 8HP Mariner outboard with the tank, hose, and an aluminum stand for $750. The motor is absolutely mint. The owner said his father bought it new and that it has been used once or twice a year. She ran like a dream. Not a mark on it inside or out. Even the prop has all the paint. It was used on a lake. The only thing I noticed was that the pee hole wasn't really pushing out water with a powerfull stream at idle. Once it was put in gear and throttled up, it pushed it out fine. Can anyone tell me anything about this engine and it's year. The model mumber is 661 S 020495 made in Japan.
Thanks,

What gives? Nobody can help with this one? If you can, I'd also like to know who made it.
Thanks,

According to my source, that serial number is for a 1979 5 hp motor. Don't know why the discrepancy. However, if it is a 70's model, it was made by Yamaha. These are very good motors but some parts are hard to find. I have a 1976 28 hp and its been bulletproof.

Same here, I have that serial number listed as a 1979 5hp short shaft. It was made in Japan by Yamaha.

Definately not a 1979 or a 5HP. Let me recheck the model #. I rechecked the model # and I misread it.Getting old is a bummer. The model number is 6G1 S 020495 It also has 8M stamped above the model #

Could this be a 1995 Yamaha 8HP?

Not 1995, it is a 1985 model. 8hp, short shaft. Made in Japan by Yamaha.

Thanks for the info. It looks like brand new, but I had a problem with the pull cord not engaging the flywheel. I'm not certain what I'd have to do to fix it. I'm not certain that an 85 even in mint condition is worth $750.
Thanks again

All fixed. When I looked at it close, I saw there the guy misbolted the plunger under the cowling that prevents starting in forward or reverse. I bolted it in the right place and it's working fine.

Here's a good one. I bought the motor and bought an impeller for the water pump from the local Merc dealer. I gave him the model # which he used to order the impeller. When I got it and tried to replace it, it wasn't the right one. I took the motor to him today and he said the the moter was definately a late 90's regardless of the serial number. Could the model # be a mistake?
