I have a MercruiserType 1, I think, and am wondering which lube to use. Looks like there are two types one being Premium Lube and the other being Quick Silver. It says not to mix the two and want to use the correct lube when I service the lower unit today. Which one should I use? Thanks

The Quicksilver High Performance Gear Lube (the green stuff) is what I would suggest.

I think as long as you make sure to drain all of the old lube out, it would be fine. When they say don't mix them, they don't want you adding a little bit of the synthetic stuff to top off a unit full of the regular lube.

Well it seems like I just keep on "shooting myself in the foot!" I was going to let the foot down to service the lube and it didn't move. Checked the fluid level and it was foaming so I thought "mabe it's got air in the lines." Went back to the left outboard hydraulic cylinder and then it happened! Putting the line fitting back into the cylinder "the cylinder $&%@ threads stripped!" How do I get this repaired? It's a flared fitting for the line so I guess I'll have to find a SS repair fitting to go into the aluminum cylinder. Anyone have any experience with this problem with any advice? Thanks

In years past I've seen repair parts but can't remember what they're called. Basicaly it's a stainless steel female fitting that will screw into the cylinder after it has been drilled and threaded. Lock tite was added to the threads before it was threaded in. Anyone got a clue?

i think what yer referring to are heli coils. i have no idea if they make them to work for your application though...

No it's definitly not Heli-Coils. I've used them many times for other applications. Good guess though!

There are many thread repair kits on the market.. This is a list I found in a few minutes..

Heli-coil
Thread-sert
Timesert
Re-coil
Sav-a-thread
EZ-lok inserts
Keenserts
Well-nut

Take your pick, but my experience is that the cylinder housing needs to be replaced.

Silly questions... Why were you removing the hydraulic tube to change the leg oil?

The foot would'nt go down and was trying to release pressure so it would go down by hand pressure. What I'm looking for is not a thread repair but an oversize fitting that I can drill and tap that will accept a 3/8" fitting.

The leg not going down is usually the end cap seals have leaked water into the end cap and it's corroded and is grabbing the piston rod (shiny shaft coming out of the ram). The only fix it to replace the end cap. That can be done with the ram still on the engine, and the hydraulic lines intact. But now the threads are damage too, I would suggest you find a new ram, complete. Either from a wrecker or ebay, or a friendly Merc dealer with lots of junked engines. If you get a second hand one, put a seal kit though it, or you'll end up with the same problem as you have now. And leave the leg trimmed DOWN when you park the boat....

Its a high pressure (3000+ psi) hydraulic system. All of the fittings need to have a tapered seat for the line to torque against to form a seal. Unfortuneately for you there is nothing you can drill/tap/machine by hand to give you that tapered seat back.
You need a new cylinder.
Check out SEI and see if they have a cylinder to fit your rig.

just a thought, are they the same type of lines as brake lines? If so, I know Ive gotten a reducing bushing type of fitting for brake lines before, where they still have the seat on the inside. But then again, you'll never find one in stainless.

I think your thinking what I've been thinking! I could use a steel fitting and do a home plateing of nickel, bronze or the like!

not to rain on your good fortune of finding parts. but imho, beware of glm parts. i've used a few of them. if i have the choice, which you may not due to nla parts, i would pick another aftermarket part.

one part i got that was glm was a shift shaft and shift lever for the bell housing. not to much to that part. i had to file to fit and finally got bummed that i had to do that and got an oem part. but if they can't make a simple shift shaft. more complex parts may leave even less to be desired... maybe...

this is a fyi only comment on the few glm parts i've used.. good luck in what ever ya chose to do..

i too think a new (different) ram is in order for the high pressures that the trim system uses..
