The Hull ID is located next to the shifter, it is 1016908. Would this ID mean that this boat was made in August of 69 and was the 101st Chieftain made in this year? The boat itself looks alot like the one pictured in the 1970 brochure in the last post. It is approximately 21.5 feet long. and has the 165hp mercruiser in it.

Re: Need Help Identifying Chieftain Boat Year

I don't think they are like cars. The title doesn't reflect the year in all cases. This is kind of hit and miss.

My boat ends in 70, yet it's a 1971 according to the title.

Pictures are the best way to ID them. Look for traces of the original color, take measurements etc.. High tech stuff like that.

We love pictures so let's see her. It's kind of a requirement. I don't make the rules, I just lives by em.:D

Re: Need Help Identifying Chieftain Boat Year

Here is a pic of my Chieftain, the title when I purchased it said 1986 but it had just been just transferred over to a Minnesota title. I called Wisconsin where it was last titled correctly and they said it was a 1973. The man I purchased it from listed it on Craig's List as a 1986. I took a day off to drive to look at it because the price seemed so good. I was really disappointed when I got there and found it to be much older. He wouldn't admit that it was older, only that he was going by the age on the title which said 1986. My belief is that he titled it as a 1986 to bring up the resale price. Either that or he was pretty dumb. After inspecting it and listening to the engine I gave him what he wanted because of how good the boat condition was and the newer trailer that came with it (not shown in the pictures). With the nice condition of the boat I was actually hoping for it to be as old as possible and am still trying to place the age for sure. I think that he was trying to sell it because although the engine sounded good with the muffs on, it stalled out at about 2000 rpm and also wouldn't shift out of forward. I had the coil wire replaced for the stalling and an electrical connection fixed on the shift interrupt switch for the shifting problem. This was done right before I winterized it and I am now looking forward to using it this spring when the ice goes out up here in Northern, MN. Moral of the story is beware of Craig's List scammers and all's well that ends well.

Very nice boat. Mid-'70s for sure. Welcome to the Starmada!
