Getting ready to change my oil in a 1987 Bayliner with a OMC 5.0 in it and was wondering what the oil capacity was so i will know how much to buy. I have to drive a hour to get my oil and only want to make one trip. Any help would be great and open to any tips as this is my first boat and oil change. Who ever changed it last time put WAY too much in it as it is half way up the stick. Going to also change the stern drive gear oil too but I found alot of help on that subject. Thanks in advance!

Re: Oil Capacity for OMC 5.0

Howdy,

Buy at least 7 qts. It'll take about 5 qts and you'll need an additional qt for "make-up" oil. Make sure that you check when it's in the water to get the right deck angle.

If you;re changing the drive oil. Use Mercury HP gear oil or other marine type gear oil.

Drain it from the bottom plug, fill it from the middle one. Don't deviate from the OEM OMC service manual procedure when filling it.

Cheers,

Rick
