Hi,
I have tried the links above to identify my Mercury outboard, but to mo avail. I was hoping someone here maybe able to help as I want to be able to look after it properly.
It is as follows:
A black plastic, squarish case, with mercury in White on the sides.
It says it was made in Mexico, with a serial number if A115459. Maybe a 1959 model?
It has 3.5 on the casing. I assume that's the horse power.
The fuel mix is 50/1. I assume it's 2 stroke.
It started first time!
What I need to know is whether it's air or water cooled, aswell as the model.
Thanks in advance
Chris

None are Air Cooled!!!! They are all water cooled. Could not find the serial number under the Mercury line for a 3.5. Is this a single cylinder or multiple cylinders?? I don't seem to be able to locate any 3.5 with the "A" prefix designation. Not sure what you have.

It has 1 spark plug so i assume 1 cylinder.
If its water cooled, shouldn't i expect to see a jet of water coming out somewhere? There are 5 holes part down the shaft casing that appear to be exhaust, is this maybe the water outlet?
I have attached a photo of the engine.
Thanks
Chris

Should there be water coming out those holes? Yes. Maybe a mist, not much more than that. Most will go out the exhaust - IF it is pumping water in the first place. If the motor is new to you and the previous owner gave no indication that the waterpump had been serviced recently, go ahead and replace the impeller, regardless of whether it 'looks' good. Impellers are cheap insurance...

The exploded images from Faztbullet look identical to what i have, i shall go for that.
Now to find the impeller, wish me luck!

Faztbullet,
The diagrams you showed me are under Mercruiser. Sorry for my ignorance, but is there a difference between Mercury and Mercruiser? If so, what is the difference?

Thanks Fatz,
Now i can see on the exploded diagrams that there is a water tube and impeller, but i can't find a pee hole. There are 6 holes at the bottem of the shaft which i assume are the intakes, and 5 holes half way up the shaft, which when i ran it in a bucket of water, exhaust fumes came out of aswell as a little water. Are the 5 holes the 'pee hole'?

Re: Can't identify outboard from stickies above

I think he got it from the description if the casing. Under 3.5, there are 3 heading fir serial numbers. The first 2 are rounded 2 part cases, the last is a squarish case.
Coincidently I found a serial number on the engine block itself, 843-8693.
It seems to match the serial number shown in that it's above 6*******
