1991 175 hp Evenrude, non oil inject. Having 2 gas tanks, I was told to mix one 50:1 for normal use (running about) and the other 100:1 for trolling use only, Can anyone confirm? Makes sense but new concept to me. Can anyone confirm Thanks "ESOX"

I have only seen the 100/1 mix ratio recommended with Ams oil products.

My opinion is "Don't do it" and that's all there is to it. Stick with the recommended mix for normal use. Normal use to me includes trolling, WOT and anything in between.

50:1 at all times. if you troll at lot, open your plug gap another .005. regular .030 gap open to .035. this will help with fouling plugs.

Although you may get by fine with 100:1 for trolling. Think about what happens when you have a senior moment and forget to swap tanks before dashing off WOT to the next hole? You got it -- the next trip will be to the engine rebuilder.

even if they come out with an oil that can be used for 100:1( maybe this one has done it..i don't know)

it will not be enough oil for it to be stored without it being fogged. you know?

flash rust!

Who told you that? a marine engine salesman hungry for another sale? If you start loading up then every hour or so, put it in neutral and rev it up a little. (turn into the wind first)

Follow the manufacturers specs! An Engine depends on the oil for more than lubrication. You may get away with doing it, But Really WHY Chance it? At best your going to shorten the engines life...Just My Opinion/Thoughts !

Remember my Opinions are FREE !!

And there worth what you pay for them too !!

I read that Yamaha's can run with no oil at slow/idle speeds, which is good to know for an emergency. This suggests that less oil will work at low speeds. But I wouldn't chance it either!

Is this something put out by the manufacturer? Just curious about the source.

Troll all day long at 50-1, but before you put it on the trailer for the day give it a hard 10 minute run, that will help blow out any excess oil.

I hardly have time to make this stuff up, much less go research it...

Seriously, I read it somewhere within the last 2 years that seemed like a reliable source at the time, but since I don't think I'd ever test the theory, didn't keep or remember the details. I doubt the manufacturers would want the average consumer to knwo about it, for obvious reasons.

Yea, I was just curious because I'm actually wondering if I can get away with trolling my kicker at 100:1, only trolling, no high speed operation at all .... the main engine which runs everywhere from idle to WOT wouldn't be affected because it's on an OMS system.

50:1.....trolling/kicker - 50:1......trolling, 4-250hp anything, any speed, any 2-stroke, any water, any condition...reguardless of what some guy tells you. Don't play with a fuel mixture like that, it will kill your motor. It needs just as much oil at idle as it does at WOT. If the guy runs his at 100:1...good for him. It's his money he will spend on another OB or a rebuild, you on the other hand...will just keep on running with the same OB for years and years with that same old 50:1 fuel/oil mixture.

Don`t know about trolling but I have a 92 yamaha 8hp I just bought not to long ago. Everyone I talk to said to run it at 100 to 1 that`s also what the dealer told me. I thought it wasn`t good so I had to get about 20 opinions and everyone of them told me that. Mine is also a yamaha.

Re: 100:1 oil mix for trolling ?

Ok. I'll be the guy to go against the grain. 100:1 at trolling is fine. Motors with oil injection mix more like 150:1 at idle. The only issue with running that motor at 100:1 has already been mentioned and that reason is that it won't leave enough oil residue on the internals for long term storage. However, I agree with evereyone else. If you are going to mix oil anyway just mix it 50:1 and be safe. Really, how aften are you going to be idling for extended periods with a 175 hp anyway? If the smoke bothers you then switch to synthetic. Its all i use.

Yamaha's are designed for 100:1.
