The motor is a 1987, Mercruiser, i/o, 165hp (3.7L 224ci) Let me know if you need the SN#

I have 1 collapsed lifter that needs to be replaced. I have 2 questions about replacing it/them.

Do i have to take the head off in order to replace the lifter or can i do it through the push rod cover?

Secondly, what can i get away with replacing from the following?

1- Just the bad lifter
2- The lifter, push rod, and rocker assembly on the bad lifter
3- all 8 lifters, push rods, and rocker assemblies?

Thank you in advance!

edit -- can i also get a step by step or removing and replacing a lifter?

Re: Lifter replacement Question

Y ou will have to remove the valve cover and and side cover to expose the lifters. Head will not have to be removed. Rocker and push rod should not have to be replaced unless signs of damage when you inspect them.

Re: Lifter replacement Question

Go to the Adults Only section at the top of this forum and in there you can download the Mercruiser Service Manual for your engine. It will detail how to do the job. It is Manual #8 for the engine and Manual #6 for any work to your Alpha 1 Drive.
