I have a 1977 bowrider with a 351 windsor and a mercruiser alpha one. On the lake, running fine. Had it running at about 30 mph, then throttled it down quickly. It died (which is not unusual)...and when I went to restart it, the engine would not turn over.

Got home, removed the belt. Alternator and water pump spin freely by hand. Can't turn the engine using a breaker bar.

So, I removed the stern drive. Now I can turn the engine by hand, and it turns. I cannot spin the outdrive by hand.

So, it looks like the stern drive has seized up. When I removed it, there were a couple of torn seals, and signs of water.

Should I be able to spin the outdrive by hand once it is removed? And is there anything short of rebuilding the outdrive that I can check or try?

Thanks

I belive that when you go to replace it you will be looking for a MC-1 drive not an alpha. R, MR, Alpha's started in '83 i think.

So, do you guys mean that it cannot be rebuilt, or that it would be cheaper to just replace it?

I haven't done much trouble shooting other than trying to turn the outdrive by hand. Is there anything else to check before shopping for a new outdrive?

You could drain all the drive oil and inspect it for water and metal.

if your drive is indeed seized, there'll probably be metal in the oil.

If there's metal in the oil and the drive is seized, it must be rebuilt or replaced.

If you cannot rebuild it yourself, it may be better to get a new SEI drive.

Its not a GEN II ,so it will fit. The U joints are rusted, a sign of a wet bellow. Gear ratio is wrong
