Hi all, New to iboats. Looking for some answers. Have a 1978 Chris Craft Lancer with Volvo/Penta I/O. Volvo used a Chevy V8 305 that year. New gas tanks, gas, hoses, batteries, plugs, starter, water separator, and fuel filter at the carb. Boat starts every fourth or fifth try. At approx 1800 RPM I hear a noise similar to when you disconnect a hose from a compressor(Pttttsssssttt). Continues to run, but gets real shaky(boggs down), revs down, revs up, then stalls. Getting it to start back up is nearly impossible. Possibly loosing spark? Carb to be adjusted? Not running on all 8 cylinders? Any ideas would be appreciated. Also, can't seem to find the model number on the block. Any and all advise, would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Tom.

So I opened up the distributor cap and the rotor and contacts in the cap are all corroded. Replacing this week.

Sounds like a good time for new plugs too.
Make sure the advance mechanism still works while you're in the dizzy. Replace the springs if they're corroded too.

Okay, So I have changed the fuel pump and lines. I now can get the boat up to 2200 RPM's which is a hell of a lot better than I was doing before. However, it now bogs and stalls at 2200RPM's. I have ran it with the Flame Resister off and am able to see that the Rear flaps on the Carb open, but there is NO Fuel being injected. The only fuel coming in is from the two jets on the "Bow" side of the Carb. Could it be the rear fuel jets are clogged? If so, How to clean? I am running a rochester quadrajet carb which was rebuilt in 2005 and not serviced since. Thanks!

So did your air noise seem to go away or is it still there?

Re: 1978 Chris Craft Bogging/Stalls

It seems obvious as I write this about the carb not being serviced since 2005, that it would need to be cleaned. The air sucking noise now happens at about 2200RPM's just prior to it stalling. It was happening around 1000RPM's but since replacing the fuel pump, I now can get to approx 2200 RPM's before the air sucking noise and then a stall. Should I be getting fuel to the rear bowls in the carb. If so, whats the best way to clean the carb. Can I just get a can of carb cleaner and just soak it down?

The air sucking noise you hear is definitely the carb starving for fuel. If you want to do it right, carb has to come off and be rebuilt. These days with aftermarket carb kits 3-4 years is about as long as they last anyway before the gaskets dry up and the floats get soggy.

So i feel as if i was robbed because i paid $265 for a rebuilt Rochester Quadrajet Carb. (in New York). On the bright side, my issues have been resolved. I appreciate everybody's advice and wish a happy boating season to all!
