i am new to boating and i am in the market for the new 115hp or 150hp Yamaha 4 strock. i have heard nothhing but great things from all the oweners of Yama. i have been reseaching, came across the Evenrude E-Tec 2strock. i have read lots of good things about E-Tec as well with low service requirment, reliability. i am thinking to go with to E-Tec . can some one help me and give me some pointer between the two. Thanks a lot

Re: Evenrude E-Tec vs Yamaha 4 strock

i have not had either engine but have heard great things about both. a lot of guys in my marina have had the etec since they came out with very few problems. a few things to consider. the etch is a lighter engine. therefore a 115 etec should have more power than the same hp yam. the etec has a lot less moving parts. less stuff to break. theoretically the yam should be better on gas but the weight factor may make that less of a consideration.

Both great engines. Both state of the art. The weight difference is not big enough to worry about.

I would go for the ETEC for purely subjective reasons.

i was out yesterday in a boat with twin 225 Yammy 4 strokes, great motors. but is disliked the clunking when shifting gears, like there was a lot of play in the clutch dogs.

if you havent considered this into your purchase then heres a heads up. annual service on a 2stoke is about half as much as annual service on a 4stroke. not exactly half, but enough.

Re: Evenrude E-Tec vs Yamaha 4 strock

There ISN'T annual service on E-Tecs, other than hitting the grease fittings. The first service for an E-Tec is at 300 hours or 3 years.

i'm in ny and i priced one out. the dealer by me had one for 10,500 plus rigging and setup. all told it was gonna be about 13,000. there was another dealer who had a leftover for 8500 but it was a 20" shaft. if i had 13000 i would have jumped but i'm broke. both my wives drive me to drink. (the misses and the boat)

You know....I have owned nothin but johnsons and evinrudes but have worked on em all (brands). I catch a lot of grief from fellow boaters around here for bein a die hard johnnyrude fanatic. my answer to them is always the same. Simplicity is the key. A blind man could diagnose and repair a johnnyrude man. also, every review and head to head test I've seen or read the e-tec blows em all out the water
