I have a 75 hp from 1980. It run great but know overheat buzzer on it. So I added one. I hooked one wire to blue and one to the orange. When I try to test it I hear nothing. I turn the key on and ground out the overheat sensor like the book says and nothing. Wiring is all good and clean. Dose the motor got to be running?? Is this the right way to wire it?? Please help I just want to update my boat with all the bells..

I have the same problem but on an 89 50 horsepower force. I wired it to the orange and blue wires and got nothing. i know the horn works when hooked directly to the battery.

I feel any hot wire with the switch on and the orange wire, as a ground should work. If you know the horn/alarm/buzzer/etc works hooked directly to the battery, this is basically the same. Below is a past post that works on my 1970, 35 HP Chrysler.

Good Luck!

Re: how to test thremoswitch

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I found this info related to my horn & Thermostat switch problem. About mid way the info at the address below or run a search on wickware.

My horn?s ground is coming from the switch (if I?m not confused, the orange wire). If I ground the orange wire at the switch to the engine (as over heating will do) with my stitch on, my horn will sound. My horn will also sound if I press my horn button, which grounds the horn.

This might be a stupid question but what is your orange wire hooked up to at the motor?

I believe the circuit remains open until the overheat sensor (orange wire) gets to a high enough temp (overtemp) to close the circuit and energize the horn. Try grounding the circuit by attaching a wire from the orange wire on the wiring block directly to a good ground.

Have you checked the thermoswitch itself ? All the wiring in the world won't help a bad switch.

Re: Over heating alarm (how to)

The buzzer needs to be in series with the sensor and a power source.

Take a jumper off the red ignition terminal and run it to the buzzer. Take the orange wire and run it to the buzzer. When you ground the the orange wire, the buzzer will activate. In this case, the buzzer will activate any time regardless of the ignition switch position when the sensor exceeds 180 degrees.

If you want to make it neat, make the connections at the terminal boards and buss bars.
