Effective but safe silicone removal...

I recently bought a 1986 Mirage which was very neglected by her previous owner. The swim platform was the first thing to go. It needed new brackets and a good sanding and varnish. Anyways, there was a bed of nasty silicone under the brackets. I found that a rubber bar used to clean sanding belts works great. It's like an eraser but on a much bigger scale. I hope this helps anyone faced with similar dilemas. By the way, I love this forum. It's the first place I look when I encounter a boating challenge. Thanks you guys.

Also... if you go to an automotive parts store that sells auto paint, you should be able to find a pin stripe removal wheel. Like you said, it's made out of a substance similar to a pencil eraser with the exception that it has an arbor to fit in a drill. It's great to get rid of old silicone and old vinyl pin stripes without damaging the fiberglass.
