I have a Sea Ray 1975 powered by a Mercruiser 888 (Ford 302). The outdrive is a Mercruiser Pre Alpha (http://www.mercstuff.com/drive_idprealpha.htm).

I have a neighbor who offering me his outdrive for $300. Which I need, if it fits. I believe that it is a Alpha 1 but I am not sure.(according to merctsuff.com) I?ve added a few pictures. I need the drive and gimbals housing, bell housing, etc. Basically the entire setup.

Before I decide to purchase it I need to know if it will fit my engine. Do I need to know any gear ratios? What do i need to do to make sure it works on my engine?

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

That drive will just bolt up but you need to know the gear ratio .what kind of motor was it attached to?

I don't know what motor it is exactly since half of it is gone but i do know that its a is/was a six cylinder (inline six). The out drive has 3.0 liter written over it. The serial number of the out drive is: 6895083

Will the gimbal housing, ring, and everything also work?

Regardless of what is in the boat now, the drive has the 3.0L sticker on it.

Unless it has been regeared, it is geared for the 4 cyl. 3.0L.

So this means that it cannot or it can bolt up to my Mercruiser 5.0 Ford Engine?

It will bolt up to your housing but the gearing is way too low 1.98-1 vs 1.50-1 that you need.

That is a loaded question...since you think that it was running behind a 6 cylinder. It is quite possible that it was regeared to match that displacement, or the owner played with the prop to make it work. I don't know how any one here can foretell this....

As for a 'plug and play' issue, someone will probably know if it will bolt up. What I can't answer is if a 3.0L drive will need to have the gearing changed.

Hang in there for Don to see your post...if he doesn't know, then it ain't worth knowing!

Happy boating!

OK well if its not an easy answer then I'll just let it slide.

But, i did find the exact same out drive as the one that i have now (Pre-Aplpha) but it was connected to a V8 GM. I have a V8 Ford. Do you think this will work. I'll get pictures tomorrow.

Re: Outdrive Replacement Question/Help.

Again, without knowing the gear ratio in the drive you want to purchase,it`s a crap shoot.
might be 1.50 .might be 1.65 .Unless you can verify that this previous drive /motor combination worked correctly (proper WOT rpm with the correct prop) on that other engine.
