I'm having a problem with my motor staying running. I have thoroughly cleaned my carburetors and replaced all parts within carburetor. I have also thoroughly cleaned and replaced all parts within the fuel pump as well as replaced the fuel filter. I have fine tuned the adjustment on the needles within the carburetor. The motor was running for 5 or 6 minutes with the muffs on, seemingly with no problems. The motor died and has been difficult to start since, and if it does start it will only stay on for a few seconds. Can anyone help me with suggestions of what might be wrong at this point?

Re: 1988 Mercury 60hp outboard motor

I do have a vented gas cap, and it is open. I also have a primer bulb, and the fuel line has been been checked from tank to motor. The motor will roll over like it is trying to crank, but it only stays for couple seconds. I did notice after I had tried cranking it for just a few minutes, the starter and the wiring gets hot. The spark plugs have been changed also. Any other suggestions.
