Looking at at 2000 pursuit 3400 for a friend and just trying to get some info on hours before motors need to be rebuilt or replaced. He went and looked at it yesterday and his only concern is the hours on the motors. They are telling him it has Detroit Volvo motors. The boat has 1600 hours and was told that the owner just fished all the time with it. So am guessing it is all trolling hours. What are your thoughts and hours people are seeing before needing work.

Diesels last generally 2x longer than a gasoline of comparable size. 1600 does not sound that high. Not sure though what the max is.

I figured that they would last atleast 2x longer. Their must not be allot of diesel people on here I figured 20 results by this morning. I just don't want to see him spend this much money and have to rebuild motors next year becuase the motors only last 2000 hours.

Ayuh,.... I would expect to be able to get Atleast 5000hrs out of a diesel,...
10,000hrs is Not unheard of....

I have some diesel equipment around that's approaching 20,000hrs....

Marine diesels do last longer then gassers. That being said in the past ten years there have been some engines that have done better than others. If your friend is serious about this boat, besides having a surveyor look at the overall condition of the boat he should have a marine diesel tech, who works on the specific motor(s) spend some time with them.

Diesels do last longer, but they also are much more expensive. My neighbor sucked up a plastic bag and lost an engine last year on his Mainship. The bill was $ 54K and that was just for an engine only replacement. A full re-power; engine, transmission shaft strut/supports can be a $ 75K- 100K event.

They are telling him it has Detroit Volvo motors.

Might want to have him find out what engine it really is. Volvo or Detroit, there isn't any such thing as a Detroit Volvo.

Okay he is supposed to find more about the motors today. I found out the same thing about the motors they make a detroit motor or a volvo motor. The only thing he is sure of they are the 370hp diesel motors.

Yes, but what the buyer is being told may be correct. I seem recall looking a boat 7-8 years ago that had diesels. I can't remember whether the deal was they were a Volvo design built by Detroit, or Volvo built and just sold and supported by Detroit. I do know that all of the current Detroit truck engines are designed by Mercedes
