General kill switch question

Hello all,
I recently picked up an 88 Bayliner Capri 1950 Bow-rider with a 5.0 cobra OMC. The previous owner said the kill switch failed so he taped it up and shoved it behind the dash. I would like to fix this before hitting the water... would this work ??

I am fairly familiar with electric wiring and know that I can do this simple job - but I don't know if there is anything special I need for this type of motor/setup, I'm hoping this little 7 dollar switch will work.

Thanks!

Re: General kill switch question

This should easily do the job. But before you go to the trouble of ordering the switch, check the existing one. Since it already is "shorted" I fail to see how it could quit working, unless it is broken.

I have never seen one that wouldn't work as long as the clip was properly installed. Just make sure the clip is completely inserted, sometimes they can look to be in place, but are slightly out of position.

Also, try pulling out on the red button, to make sure the clip hasn't been damaged, or replaced incorrectly.

Of course he may have removed it which changes everything.

Re: General kill switch question

There are three types of kill switches and you have chosen one of two correct types. Magneto ignitions must use a switch that "closes" to kill the engine. Battery ignitions like your I/O require a switch that "opens" to kill the ignition. So when the lanyard clip is in place there are switches that are closed, open, and a third type is universal meaning it can work for both types of ignition. On the universal switch you simply use different terminals when wiring for magneto or battery ignition.

Unfortunately there was no clip/lanyard - Im guessing he threw it away :(
You can buy replacement clips.

But to test the switch, pull it out with your fingers, or a pair of pliers and turn the key. See what happens, if nothing, use a meter on the switch, it may be something else, i.e. a disconnected wire.

The ones that come with the Bayliners of that vintage are junk. I know...I had one and bypassed mine. Buy a new one if you want it.
