I have a 1985 Chris Craft with a Mercruiser 140MR. I just bought the boat and tried to start it yesterday with a set of ears attached with ample flow of water from my garden hose. I followed all starting procedures.
Some background information:
The battery I had in it was replaced with a brand new marine battery, 27M group, fully charged. What's odd, and it might be some clue to the problem, the previous owner said he had just put in a brand new battery the day I bought it just three weeks ago, that battery was replaced with a brand new battery.
I checked, all power accessories were off. I don't know what caused the battery to go bad, but the story gets more bizarre. Here goes.
First, with a brand new battery, I started the boat engine. It ran smoothly after several attempted cold starts. I let it run for ten minutes, checked the cooling water outflow(which was nice and warm). The I turned the key off. The motor would not stop, but kept running!
Next, since I had no fuel cut-off valve, I pulled the coil wire to stop the engine. I reconnected the coil wire, started the engine again, and it fired right up. I did this a couple more times just to be sure it would start, but the key would never turn the engine off. All the time the water was on, so no problems with cooling.
I check and cleaned all the connections on the keyed ignition switch on the dash. Started the engine, just fine, but it still would not turn off by the key. So I supected a switch problem, I bought and installed a new marine ignition switch. Of course, I had the same results, the engine would start, but would not cut off.
The battery is still strong, and still charged throughout all this. All of this was in one afternoon.
The last time I started the engine, it ran for just a couple minutes, and it suddenly a stopped. Tried to crank it, it turns over nicely, but it would not fire at all, and I cannot get it to start.
One more observation, I did notice the electric choke assembly is just a tiny bit loose, after inspecting the engine afterwards. This might explain the engine cut-off?
ANY Help! Appreciated
