hey guys im fairly new to boat motors. i picked up a boat/trailer/motor for 125 bucks the other day. i bought it for the trailer for my 16 foot row boat. the guy said he never tried to have the motor running because he was going to restore the boat. well i junked the boat but figured id try to get the motor running to put it on my boat. what should i do to try and get this running. i took out the spark plugs and put some marvel mystery oil in there and it seems to turn fine. i kinda hooked up the electric start and got it to turn but nowhere near fast enough to start it. i didnt check for spark thats as far as i went. what should i do now. where do i find a rebuild kit for the carb on this old bugger. i also have a 1937? johnson model a 2.5hp and a neptune mighty mite motor ill be working on soon as well.

Hi and welcome to the forum! The first thing I would check is compression. First clean all the electrical connections so you can get the starter to turn the motor over fairly well. Then check compresion. Should be 100+psi and even between the cylinders. I like to see 110-120 on those motors. If you have good compression, then check for spark with a spark tester. Spark should jump a 1/4 inch gap with a snappy blue jolt. Since the motor's condition and service record are unknown, I'd check under the flywheel and clean/adjust the points at minimum. I'm not sure if that motor has an inspection port on the flywheel. If it does, remove the cover and you can see the condition of the coils and adjust the points right through the port. Set points to .020". Then install new Champion J4C plugs gapped to .030". Next, I'd clean/rebuild the carb and put new gas lines on her. Then change the gear oil in the lower unit, and see if there is any water getting in the lower unit. If there is water intrusion, there is a leaky seal somewhere which needs replacing. Then replace the water pump impeller. Those are the steps I usually take on a "condition unknown" motor. You can get most of the parts right here on I-Boats, and even if you had to replace all the electricals, install a carb kit, re-do the seals, and install the impeller, parts should be less than $200. So for a little over $300 you'll have a great motor which will last another 50 years:)

While it is true iBoats carrys a lot of parts they are out of stock on a lot of the Old evinrude parts on a continual basis. I found the posted site to have the parts for my motor IN STOCK and available for immediate shipping at very reasonable prices.

I'm just sayin...

Whaler you need to be better informed. iBoats is great, but it does NOT stock all the Parts for the 1960 Evinrude 40 hp LARK. Occasionally you will have to shop elsewhere.

You didn't mention all parts; just tune up stuff. Laing's doesn't carry everything either, and yes, I do order from them occasionally. I just don't advertise for them on some else's business site who sells the same stuff.
