Re: Coast Guard Auxiliary
Not sure what age you all consider old fart age but my wife and I am are mid 40's and members of CGA. My daughter, who is 18, is also in the CGA and many a young man would say she is a hot chick but not to my face of course.
The CGA in inland lakes mainly does safety patrols, vessel inspections and public education. We have no law authority but we do have phone numbers of the Park Rangers who are the law. I can only speak for the Utah area, we do a lot of tows and all for free. We promote on the water safety and help do that by patrolling. The CGA is a volunteer group so we do not get paid. When that vessel inspector shows up it is on his / her own dollar. Do not worry about tipping, they will not accept it just thank them. Oh, the CGA and Power Squadron are the best way to get a VSE. They will let you know what is needed, leave you a check list and go. The rangers may leave you with more then a fix it and get it list.
The CGA is for those who love to boat and be around boats. My guess to why most are of retirement age is that it take alot of time and most people's weekends are booked with family and other activities. The best way to find out about an organization it to talk with some one who is in it. Find a local CGA person and ask them about it.
