I have a 17ft Maxum with a force 70HP outboard.
I'm looking for a bit of help, when idling the engine runs fine but when wide open throttle and on the plane it dies or slows drastically. I removed the carb and cleaned out and then went out and for the first 30 mins it ran fine then problem occurred again. Can anyone offer any advice. when I was cleaning carb out the bowl had bits of debri and I was surprised there is no air filter on this engine. the bottom of the engine cover is starting to corrode and one of the theories I had was that dust and crap was getting sucked in. should there be an air filter on this engine?

any ideas to help with the problem would be gratefully received.

Debris in the bowl is a fuel supply problem. Got a fuel/water seperator between tank and squeeze bulb and an inline filter between squeeze bulb and carbs.? Disintegrating cowling foam should be removed/scraped out. Reclean carbs after foam removal.

Re: Force 70HP running problem Help!

Thanks for the reply,

I don't think there is an inline filter only the gause at the fuel pump. there is I think a fuel primer which i don't think has a filter. accoustic foam in the hood is not breaking up as such but seems very dirty and this is where I think the isue is coming from. this is why i was wondering if there should be an air filter fitted to the carb. I noticed from photo's online that there is a filter on the 120HP but can't find a photo of the 70HP. If i remove the foam what can i replace it with is it a special type of foam? I don't live anywhere near outboard suppliers etc so if I could know what type of foam would be great. Also the aluminium base of the hood under the engine has paint and aluminium flaking off another reason why I'd be better with an air filter.

Can anyone suggest an air filter for this model of outboard also if you can suggest what type of in line fuel filter to fit.

Cheers

Neil
