Steering was not moving. I've got it apart somewhat. Cable responds from wheel so that looks OK. Last owner was less then helpful. The dent is old but I have no idea how much it effects the steering. I can't seem to get it any more apart. A diagram of what is inside would be great. If I can just get it apart, maybe I can fix the dent.

Here's another pic, the dent is on the under side of the instruction tag. Sorry about all the grease and dirt, I was working on it before a storm and had to give up.

Re: steering dent, 115 mercury

I just need a little more help. I am down to the two nuts on either end, and the cable I guess does not back up enough to come completely out of the tube at this point of disasemblly. The nut on the cable end is fighting me, I have to tighten the other end real tight and then I can get a 1/4 turn off the other nut. Very slow going. If any one knows if this dent is making the whole process harder please speak up.
Thank you

Wow that is in a bad spot and probably is pinching the cable.

It needs to be replaced. As for suggestions. I'd say the vagueness of the original post was probably the hinderance. Now that it is more clear the nature of the issue, I'm sure you'll get more responses.

You may need to just cut it of and replace the whole 'shabang'.

How the heck did that happen ? YIKES !.....That can't be making the steering work well at all !...lol...if the threads are rusty , try taking a sturdy wire brush to the exposed threads...the more rust you brush off, the less rust will clog the threads on the nut... also , work the nut back and forth a little bit each way...it helps to re-cut the threads . Use PLENTY of penetrating oil.. I think you should start looking for a blown matching outboard with the same piece that is bent on yours...good luck bro

The serial # plate is clearly dented...if that dent is also into the steering/pivot tube then yes, that will pinch the steering rod at the end of the steering cable.

I doubt if the steering/pivot tube can be repaired/"undented"; you'd have to replace it.

Will the motor move freely from side to side with the steering cable disconnected?
Does the steering rod slide freely inside the tilt tube?
