Re: Help obsessed with my boat

Good post, Philster! Although I hate to admit it to you, being the harsh critic that I am, you pretty much summed up my feelings there!

I almost lost one of my kids in a car wreck 20 years ago when he was 6 (that's him in my avatar with my granddaughter). When that happens, you figure out pretty quick that it's the people in your life that are important, not the things. You couldn't pay me to be polishing gelcoat or Armor-alling crap if there's a chance to be out on the water having fun with family or friends.

Too true. Nobody sits on their deathbed and says "I wish I worked more". The same could be said of anything. On your deathbed, at least you have or kept a beautiful boat in your garage for many, many years. Money and time well spent. ;)

Re: Help obsessed with my boat

Indeed. I saw in a comic strip recently (not an exact quote, but close) a scene where the characters were talking about what frightens them. One of the responses particularly touched me:

"I'm afraid of constantly saying 'I'll do that someday.', or 'Maybe next year.', until eventually there are no years left."

We're all here but a brief time and then move on. Your clock is ticking, just like everyone else's, and looking at a boat in a driveway is a pretty lousy way to spend that dwindling time.

man i love forums - especially when a thread is allowed to evolve into what his has become...

That is a great post and sums up beautifully what some in life have realized and what we hope others will soon realize as well.

I think you're eaither born with a realization that life is finite and you have to squeeze a lifetime of experience into a relatively short period of time.

others dont realize it until it is too late - i am still trying to get my wife to realize that "you can't take it with you" and money is meant for spending, cars are made for driving, and boats are made for fun.

Re: Help obsessed with my boat

We have much different obsessions. Mine is with using my boat, and maintaining my boat, and cleaning my boat, and improving my boat, and being sure I break 50 hours a year on my boat, getting more and more water toys to go along with the boat, improving my skiing and boarding behind my boat, and in the off season reading about boats. My obsession is much more broad than yours. You just need to broaden your obsession.

Now don't get me wrong -- food is only allowed to be eaten on the swim platform of my boat!

careful! letting the boat sit too much leads to dry rot and gums up the fuel system. Better go for a ride. :D

Don't know why but I was thinking about this yesterday at work, fast forward 15 years, all your kids are grow and moved away, do you want to sit and think about all the times you looked at your beautiful boat or remember all the fun you had with your family using the boat.

I am to the point in life to where my kids are flying the coop, one getting married next month, another on campus at college and one still in high school that spends every waking moment with her boyfreind.

Man, they grow up fast, take advantage of having them around while you can, once they all move out you can get another boat and stare at it remembering all the fun you had it your old boat.
