Hello to all,
I have a question about a G.E. model# GSS22JFMCCC, 22 CF Side By Side refrigerator stopping making Ice and not cooling as good as it was a few days ago. Well, I called the Reconditioned Appliance place that I brought it from a few weeks ago and they sent out a technician this morning and he replaced the miniature mother board circuit board in the back of the fridge today and said that the defrost part of the fridge that the circuit board controls is bad so he replaced it. Now, after he left I went ahead and defrosted the panel that is directly in front of the coils and defrosted with a hair dryer alot of ice build up on the coil in the freezer side. Do you think that the circuit board replacement will fix the issue or doe you think the freon level is low. He assured me that the freon isn't low, he didn't even use a set of guages to check this, but swares up and down that the circuit board goes bad alot in these G.E. side by side refridegerators so hopefully he is right. What do you think??? Thanks, Bob:confused:

He is most likely correct,but he should have deiced the evaperator also instead of you doing it,make sure you get all the ice out of their.some of the sxs you also had to replace the evap.motor as they can take the board out also,keep checking the back freezer wall for a couple of weeks and make sure there is no frost build-up on it,otherwise the problem isn't fixed could be a bad heater or termination switch..

About all residential refrigerators do not have service valves. He would have had to install one. Some techs will use a line pierecing style which I don't care for as they will lead to a leak in the system. Only about 10% of all refrigeration problems is due to a freon leak. If there was NO ice on the evaporator, then I would suspect a stuck defrost cycle or then maybe a leak.

Re: G.E. Side by Side Refridgerator-model# GSS22JFMCCC

Hello again,
I just got home a little while ago from work and have restarted the refrigerator after deicing it for 5 hours and decided to take the rear panel off inside the refrigerator and see what it looks like on the evaporator coils inside the freezer section. I noticed that there is frost froming on the bottom half of the evaporator and the other half has no frost on it at all. Having some frost on the bottom is that a sign of things to come or is it normal to have frosting on the lower half of the evaporator inside the freezer section? Please let me know because I am definitely no appliance repairman. Also, on a side note, it is cooling really good and making ice cubes again like before. Let me know about the frosting condition and yes there was zero ice/frost on the evaporator coil after I used the hairdryer on it earlier this morning to remove the coating of ice off of it before I restarted again before lunchtime today. Thanks again for all your help. Bob :confused:

Yes frosting is normal. That is why it has programed defrost cycles. The coil will frost up quicker in high humidity conditions. This especially will happen if the door gasket is bad and or opened frequently. Since the evap coil has to run below freezing to keep your freezer at temp, it will freeze the moisture to the coil causing frost.

GE use to always use 2 defrost heaters,a few years ago they dropped the top 1 but left a spot for it,this is a problem sometimes depending on useage & humidity,i have had to install a double heater harness in order to stop the coil from not completly defrosting,they are good units but have a few weak points,the frost pattern should be even after 4-6 hrs of run time before a defrost cycle,most now are a as needed/default time now,mike243

These are also symtoms of poor air circulation I had this issue on my old ge side by side and by moveing the fridge into a caddy corner location the issue cured it's self.

So if it is a thick frosting on the bottom half of the evaporator coil inside the freezer section that is o.k.? Enough frosting that you can't see the silver fins sticking out from the coil pipes? Let me know because I am paranoid about to the point I will be taking that back access panel off so many times to see how it frost over. Am I driving myself crazy worrying about this? Let me know and yes, it seems to be cooling Great!!! and is freezing the ice cubes just fine. Let me know, Bob:confused:

if you had it totaly clear of ice it should have a even frost pattern if it hasnt been in a defrost mode.ck your door gaskets for rips or not sealing ,also ck your ice cube door & make sure its sealing,the bottom will always get more frost due to its the first part that gets the air when its running,a air leak can cause a very fast iceing condition

Still,very even frost on the evaperator should be expected,if it looks like there is more frost on the bottom of the evaperator and none and i do mean none on the top half you may have a sealed system problem mike 243 is correct in that bad door seals will give a lot of humid air into the freezer which will cause a lot of frost accumulation on the coils frost is good ice build-up is not a good thing..your model has the single heater for defrosting,GE has since changed that to a 2 heater unit with both heaters sitting side by side in the same bracket at the bottom of the evaperator.

just remeber,almost all fridges come with a 5 year sealed system warrenty,get it dated with the serial#,some companys wont tell you that or keep messing around till it is exspired,a used unit a lot of times was traded for a reason :( ,a company will haul your old 1 away at no charge,sell it cheap to another company & it gets repaired/resold.we had a service call on a maytag that was sold by a maytag dealer as new & they could not fix it,we were called in & they ran the serial # & the unit was about 4 years old & was reported as unrepairable & destroyed in another state.talk about a mad customer,i cant beleive that company is still in buisness but they are :mad: ,went out on 6-8 other calls after that company stated sealed system problems,start relays were bad :eek: ,mike243

Re: G.E. Side by Side Refridgerator-model# GSS22JFMCCC

/////UPDATE////
I was not happy with the refrigerator and went and bought a new to me Kenmore Side By side from a private party on Fathers Day and it is working GREAT!!!! so far. I do notice if I am lucky that it definitely does its own defrost cycle cause you can hear the water dripping and sometimes hear a sizzling sound, I guess, from the water hitting the heater element and after it completes its defrost cycle Walla!!! you can hear the compressor coming on and getting cold again and it makes ice wonderfully and cools great so far. The other refrigerator, I think, had a defrost not working issue because my food was getting warmer on the fridge side. So I was not happy and made my decision that I am taking this thing, the no good refrigerator, back Monday to the reconditioned appliance store and I was shocked after I told them I was calling commander and first sergeant that they were refunding my money for a full refund. So, I picked up the refund business check and immediately deposited back into my banking account and I think we will be good to go now with our Kenmore Refrigerator which is actually nicer than the crappy one we had before that half butt worked. Thank you, Bob:)
