That engine was factory rated to run between 4500 and 5500. Current thinking is that you really need to run the engine at the top of the normal range, or around 5500. You are actually lugging the engine under 5000. The engine will still make good hp give good service at 5700. You engine has a built-in rev limiter in the power pack at 5800.

Ok I guess I need to go down on my prop, I have a 89 Stratos 179FS with a 89 Evenrude 150XP, I am turning about 4900 RPM's at WOT. The prop is a 14 1/2 x 21. I guess I need to go to a 19. It dont jump out of the hole like I thought it would.

Before spending $$ on another prop I'd look at the set up first.

Generally, when you get close to the target rpm's you will raise/lower the engine rpm about 300 by changing the prop one size. (from a 21 to 19, etc.) Maybe a little more if you are off as much rpm as you are.
