i pick up a free boat a 18ft 1959 thompson unsure of the model and the title just has a letter which dmv will hopefully be able to tell me what it means...anyway the steering cables are frozen which isn't that much of a shock but the connector to the engine is gone as well (its a 62' evinrude 75 hp ). Well to the question the helm is stuck as well any suggestions on what needs to be replace i assume the entire steering system from steering wheel to the motor any ideas where i might starting looking for a way to connect the control cables to the engine? any help would be GREATLY appreciated...

Re: steering disaster

you need to figure out if its the cable or the helm itself..

disconnect the steering cable at the engine..if you can..and turn the wheel..if it slides then your steering and cabe is good..at that point go to the engine..a bot more complicated but fixable..

if you think its the helm then you need to get your head under it to disconncet the cable from it and then see if its the helm..you might find its one or the other or maybe both...you cant do that unless you start disecting it..

the sinngle letter you speak of, the boat title.. this was usually given to boats with no numbers..some earlier boats didnt havenumber and neither did hand made boats o dmv issued letters.. her in boston you get a Z number..

Re: steering disaster

First thing you need to do is figure out what brand of steering it is. Teleflex is most popular, but there were others back in '59---some are obsolete now.
