85HP Force wont start after new Ign switch

Last weekend my 85HP Force ignition switch fell out of the switch panel in my hand.. The plastic threaded area had broken in half. I jury rigged it back together and boated on for the remainder of the day with my switch hanging out under the console.
I purchased a new 6 terminal 3-position switch and put it in last night. All terminal lettering matched up except the "A" became and "I" on the new switch..
After switching it all over I reconnected my battery and thought I would test fire the switch real fast. The starter kicks in, the dash lights work, the elec choke engages but it wont start... Seems maybe I have no fire now...? I checked all connections - all good. I swapped back to the old switch..same problem - seemingly no fire..

What could I have burnt up in all this?

Come on guys..surely somebody has seen this on an 88 model 85HP force..

I am headed home at lunch to find the kill/stop switch on the terminal strip near the starter to disconnect and see if my CDI's are going to ground.. Not sure which wire it is or how it's labeled though..

Did you check the flux capacitor discharge module on the terminal?

I had the same issue.... Switch the two m terminal wires around and it should fire...

Tried that last night.. Still no fire :(

Here's what I've done so far:

Put in new switch - wired the same - "A" became an "I" on replacement switch
Would not fire..Checked fuses under console - found no fuses on motor.
Put old swith back in (old switch was broken but worked before) now will not start with old switch.
I have now put the new switch back in, swapped M wires again..nothing..removed white wire at terminal strip and tried to start..no fire.. Pulled plug and checked voltage at wire with motor spinning over - no reading..

I cannot for the life of me figure this out. It was running FINE.. :( I dont have a CLUE what to look at next.. HELP !! :)

The white wire you disconnected.....did it go to the wiring harness or the CD modules?

I am not sure.. Should I be unhooking the one coming from the CDI's or the one from the harness?

There were actually 3 dingy white wires.. Tried unhooking each and still no start.. Turns over fine but no start, no fire..

Either disconnect the one from the wiring harness or the two from the CD Modules. If any doubt, disconnect all 3 at once and check for spark. Make sure they ends don't touch ground.

lol... isnt there a circuit breaker on the bottom of the terminal? A little black thing with a reset button.

I will give this a try in the morning and see what happens. Thanks

Sorry I couldnt help it! Im not sure if your engine has one but I have an 86 85 hp force and mine is on the bottom of the terminal board to the lower left of the water jacket. Yes it should be that tiny black box with a thin rectangle reset button on it and it is on the bottom of the terminal strip that is if you have one.

Weird...im not sure what year yours is but it sounds like a kill switch problem or a crossed wire. According to my manual 84-88' 85,125hp engines have a blue ground on one of the m's and the white on the other m on the ignition switch...i think. There may also be a kill switch.

Mine is an 88.. My "M" ign switch positions both have a white kill switch wire going to them along with another wire on each. I will check tomorrow and c if they are blue / white.. Anything is possible but I will be surprised if I crossed one.. I swapped them one terminal at a time but again, anything is possible..
