Stator, V Reg, Switch Box....

Ok so I have been working on this 1992 Mariner 115 for a few months in my spare time away from work. Last night I started her, running good. But I noticed my tach was not running. 1st thought was regulator, so I checked it. Per the manual I should have some kind of resistance from yellow to red and something from gray to ground. I didn't. So pretty sure it's the reg. During this I pulled the 2 yellow wires and was reading 16V AC from the Stator..... Does that seem low?

Thank

I have read that if the rectifier is shot then the tach will not work.

The stator open circuit voltage depends on speed. If it's 16V at 1000 rpm, it'll be 80 at 5000 rpm. Sounds good to me.

Connect the VR back up and check to see if the battery is charging when the engine is running. If it is, then connect the tachometer to one of the yellow wires without disconnecting the yellow wire from the regulator. You may have to crimp together an adapter to do that. If the tachometer works, then the VR is bad after all. If it doesn't, then the tachometer or it's supporting circuitry are bad.

If you want to double check, you could rig up a bridge rectifier temporarily, with the yellows going to the ~ terminals, the red going to +, and frame ground going to -. Tachometer would hook up to either yellow wire.

hope it helps

Thanks for the advice. I neglected to mention the charging. That was actually the 1st thing I checked. I just put a new battery in, and I was getting 12.5V DC on the battery terminals running or not... Looks like it's time for a new VR. That's fine, just didn't want to pull the flywheel for a stator! Thanks again!

I got an 89 doing something similar. Engine runs with batter disconnected ( i know it's not good to do), but no charge to the battery. Replaced the rectifier already and still not charging... This is my 89 100hp; can someone tell me if this even has a VR and it's aproximate location?

you hijacked the thread - but if you have either a rectifier or a voltage reg. not both - if the new rectifier tests good ( diode test) then stator is the problem .
