Re: shutter location

Ayuh,... It should be at the Top of the Down-pipe, just downstream of the riser....

Re: shutter location

sorry it 1984 mercruiser 140
they say the flapper will burn up and thats ok, but can it come apart in big enough pieces and get stuck in the next elbow before the exhaust/water discharges the boat.

The shutter is mostly steel coated with rubber, the rubber will burn, but the large steel pieces will be somewhere in your exhaust system. If you pull your drive you should find the pieces in there. There is no shutter in the drive, except the pieces of yours. As Bond-o says the shutter is located at the top of the exhaust pipe. Illustrated here: http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...63&bnbr=230&bdesc=EXHAUST+SYSTEM+(NEW+DESIGN) Note there is an old and new shutter, don't know which you have, but both in same place.

Re: shutter location

I found the remnants of mine (1990 3.0 Liter) behind the prop. After I found water in the oil pan. Rodded and tested the manifold, put in a new shutter(old style I guess) and it runs fine in the driveway with the muffs but in the lake the water in the oil came back. Cyl. compression is perfect and will run for an hour on the muffs fine but once in the lake the oil in the water came back. Boat shop reccomends a block or extension on the riser pipe. Any thoughts? Aftermarket manifold?
