(Carburetor Float Setting)
(J. Reeves)

With the carburetor body held upside down, the float being viewed from the side, adjust the float so that the free end of the float (the end opposite the hinge pin) is ever so slightly higher (just ever so slightly off level) than the other end. And when viewed from the end, make sure it is not cocked.

Re: Carb Float Question

Thanks for the advice. Just curious if anybody can answer this. Im sure my floats were not adjusted right, but would this make it give it too much gas when you give it throttle. Took it out yesterday, and it started and idled fine. Couldnt get over 2000 rpms without it bogging down and shutting off. Anything under that, it ran fine. Also, the adjustment screw on the side, is this just for the idle adjustment or does it affect the total carb adjustment? What would be a good starting point to set the screw at? Any quick help would be appreciated...

Re: Carb Float Question

The floats only regulate how much gas gets in the carb bowl. The jets pull gas from the bowl.
Usually if the floats are adjusted incorrectly, one of two things happen:
It run out of gas/skips at full throttle (too little fuel in bowl)
Gas shoots out of the carb at idle (not shutting off fuel quick enough)

Re: Carb Float Question

So is the screw on the side of the carb that goes into the throttle assembly the adjustment for the jets? If so, what would be a good starting point to adjust them?

High speed jets are most likely clogged. LOcated in the bottom center portion of the float chamber. Clean them carefully with a piece of single stand wire.

Re: Carb Float Question

The floats open and close the valves which allow the float bowls to fill. If the float are set so that they do not close the valve completely, the engine will flood. The fuel in the float bowls is pulled through the carburetors by the vacuum created by the movement of the pistons.

When you have had the carburetors off for service it is very important to check that the throttle plates are synchronized so that they open and close precisely together, all being fully closed when in neutral and perfectly horizontal at full throttle.

Re: Carb Float Question

I just replaced the bowl assembly on all the carbs. Old ones were warped bad. When i give it throttle, a good bit of gas comes out of the top vent hole in the air chamber of the carb. Is this normal?

Re: Carb Float Question

Also, what is the adjustment screw for? Just for the idle or does it regulate the vacuum or fuel rate at throttle too? I appreciate the help. Just want to get it right when i pull the carbs off again to set the float correctly.

Re: Carb Question??

I took the carbs off again, readjusted the floats, and double checked all the cleaning. Still cranks fine, idles good while running it in a tub in the driveway. I ran slowly up to 5000 rpm in neutral a few times, sounded good, then it started doing the same thing. If I throw the throttle down hard, it gets to 3500-4000 rpm and boggs down, smokes its butt off and stalls. Fires right back up, and continues to do the same thing. I have put new plugs and water seperator on it yesterday. Anybody have any suggestions as to what it could be before I go crazy!!??
