Re: Alpha 1 making a knocking noise

When you replaced your impeller, did you get ALL the pieces out? Maybe one piece got in the heat exchanger? Will cause the high temp.

Knock Knock, it's time to pull your drive, check the U-joints, Gimbal bearing and alignment. At this time you can turn the drive over by hand and check for noises and smoothness to. First drain the oil (drive) and see if there are any chunks in it.

Also check your prop shaft for straightness.

The old impeller was in one peice and not in bad condition.
I have drained the lower unit 2 time it has been nice and green both times. No chunks.
How hard is it to pull the outdrive and replace the u joint and gimmble or what ever it is?

And how much would it cost to pay someone to do it.

Undo the trim rams and there are 6 nuts. Make sure you are in forward gear on the shift console. Slide her back. Then you can check your drive bellows from the inside for water and holes. New gasket set costs about $6. DO NOT try to use anything else like silicone or any other sealer. You must use a new gasket. No sealer it goes on dry on a MC and with sealer on a Cobra.

Use spline grease when going back together.

If you have oil in the bellows you have an input seal leak. should be cheap to have done at a shop just take the drive in.

Gimbal bearing alone is $90-120.
U-joints about $65-80 ea.
Shop labor rate varies $90/hr to $130+/hr. Use these figures for comparison your mileage may vary.
