hi there,

my sterndrive was built in 1979. The previous owner has had it for six years, but has never changed any rubber parts such as bellows or boots. The history before this is unknown.

My question. What would you suggest changing and what is the estimated cost? In general, how frequent do those things have to be changes?

Thanks for your reply, happy boating,

popey

Replace the Bellows after 5 years of use, the impeller in the outdrive after 2 years.

Go ahead and replace all the "rubber things" -- Those things are important to keep the boat running and to keep it from sinking. ;) Always a good thing!

The cost depends upon if you do it yourself or hire someone. Costs vary from region to region. If you hire someone, be sure they know the older Mercruiser models.

If you do it yourself, look here on Iboats for parts and you will get a good idea of the cost. Most stores (online or otherwise) offer kits that contain the bellows and gimbal bearing, etc.

You will get various opinions on whether to use the OEM stuff or aftermarket - but the consensus seems to be that the Quicksilver brand of shift cable is the best to use.

Good luck!

Merc IL6 right? need to put that info in the start of every thread. Personally I would (and will next time) use the OEM driveshaft bellows and shift cable bellows (about $110) and unless the exhaust bellows is really torn up,would not change it. Aftermarket or tube should be fine for that if needed. Just my opinion.
