1989 Force 85 Stalling Problems

I just got a 89' Maxum. It has a Force 85hp 2-cycle motor. I just took it out for the first time today and had a hell of a time trying to get moving. After the help of a few nice boaters I was able to get back to the dock.

My question is why is the motor stalling? I can start it and go full throttle in neutral. It stalls and dies out once I try to accelerate in the forward gear and even the reverse gear. I thought the motor might need to be warmed up because my past experiences with 2-cycle motors. I have had it out of water and it worked fine.

I may have mixed the oil and gas wrong because I did see a excess amount of smoke when the motor was running.

Any advice will help. Thank You.

50:1. Fuel pump diaphram & clogged fuel recirculation system.

Let me add to this. I think I may mixed it wrong because I pumped the gas in and then added the right amount of oil (50:1), but is there a better way of mixing fuel? Like a gallon at a time in a 1 gallon gas can?

By the way the motor did get pretty hot and die when it was idling.

Thanks foodfisher :) for saying it maybe the Fuel pump diaphram & clogged fuel recirculation system. I will check that out a.s.a.p.

Hot and dying motor is not good. Have to check water pump also. Thermostat too.

Do the basics.Compression/spark test. How long did it set before you tried to use it? A new impeller should be installed as soon as the compression and spark have been verified.
Oil first then gas in the tank.Add fuel stabilizers as Ethanol is screwing up a lot of stuff.
If it's sat for a while the carbs could be full of gunk if and when you take them off check the reeds. The diaphram shot. The fuel line and squeezie leaking or bad.J

Agree w the others on basics: compression, spark test

Did you trailer the boat after fueling up? I've asked the same question and was told a good ride around after fueling even if you put the oil in first should mix it up enough.

Did you see water coming out of the two exhaust ports on the back of the motor? Like the others said, if you're not sure when the impeller was changed, just change it out anyway to be safe.

If you can get it idling and it stalls when you put it in gear, it may be simple as your idle adjustment screw set too low. I've run into two scenarios over the past week at my boat launch were this was the case.

Just keep track of how many gallons you pump into the tank and add the proper amount of oil accordingly. Add it at the gas station so the oil will mix with the fuel while you drive.

Re: 1989 Force 85 Stalling Problems

I have the same motor with the same problem before. check the idle speed. it is different on land then water. on land I can shift into gear without stalling but in water since there is water resistant, if the idle speed is too low it stall. What I did is that I got a tach meter and check the idle speed, it was about 600-700. I adjust it till about 900 and the problem is fixed.
