Starting issue

Hello,
After alot of work this spring I finally put her in the water today. The only problem I had was starting. I had a freshly charged battery that I purchased in Febuary. When I turned the key the started came up and was struggling to spin the flywheel. After about two seconds of cranking the starter sped up to normal starting speed and the motor began running. This went on all day long. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Thanks,
Tom

Re: Starting issue

Do a compression test.If that's ok take the starter apart and check the brushes and magnets, after time the grit falls to the bottom and builds up.Then check all connections.Grounds too!J

Re: Starting issue

Ok, I pulled the starter. I don't have a compression tool yet so at least I can check out the starter. The only problem I have is I have no clue what I'm looking at, so I took some pics.

Re: Starting issue

On the bottom of that armature.

Take some emery cloth, or fine sand paper and clean up that contact area.
Try again.

Double check all your battery and starter connections, they should be free of corrosion and gunk.

Re: Starting issue

Your gonna need new brushes(until then turn them upsidedown). Then clean up the armature it should be clean and make good contact. All that grit is creating shorts on the armatue.J

Re: Starting issue

You need to get a rebuild kit for your starter...sounds weak. Does it spin slowly...pause...then crank at normal speed? If so you have a weak starter or maybe your battery isnt as good as you think it is.

Re: Starting issue

Before we went out I just charged the battery and it was sitting at 13.5 volts. The charger said 100% charged. I figure that my starter is 21 years old might as well just buy a new one and be done with it. The prices are kinda salty but I found a real good bargin. I just need to see it its referbished or remaned. Heres the link.

Thanks,
Tom

Re: Starting issue

Clean everything up good, put some good grease in the bushings at each end, reassemble and try it again. If those bushings get dry they create too much drag and show the symptoms you describe.

Re: Starting issue

Take it to any starter rebuil shop and they can do it a lot cheaper.
The only difference between new and rebuilt is the $$$$.J
