Hey guys im new to outboard motors and need some help. Ive picked up a used 25hp evinrude and dont know what year it is. The only # i can find on it is serial # 25302 AE0004358. I also know the shaft length is to long, but it looks like it has a removable spacer so it can be shortened. Has anyone ever shortened one and if so what is envolved? Thanks!

i dont know for sure, but, to remove the spacer your going to have to replace alot of parts. if it is a spacer, the driveshaft, water tube and shift link(or more?) would be lengthened. might not be too easy/cost effective to do without the original parts.

To shorten it you will need to remove the 5" extension, obtain a standard length drive shaft, a standard length lower shift rod, and a standard length exhaust housing to gearcase bolt and shorten the water tube by 5".

The drive shaft is no longer available new.

Re: evinrude 25hp help

you need to check the shift rod length, if it was a factory long shaft then you will have to pull apart the lower unit, which is a big job for a beginner. However if someone made it a longshaft along the way it may have a 5 inch extension on the shifter in which case you just have to replace with a standard size adapter. all you have to do to check is open the small plate on the side of the leg and get a look at the brass connector if it looks like its about an inch long then its factory and bad news if it looks like its longer maybe 5 or 6 inches then your in luck. i may have the parts you need and am willing to just trade through the mail if so. hey quagmire60, i remove the cover over the shift linkage and there was a small rod attached to a brass clamp that must be about 5 inches long. I couldnt see the bottom of the brass clamp. does anyone have the parts to convert to short shaft?
