1987 85 hp force dont run???

Hello,someone please help.I have a 1987 hp 85 force, where does the water spit out from engine? engine will only run for a few seconds, then shut down .It has been sitting for a few years. This is a project bass boat.I am getting frustrated cause i dont know much about marine engines.

Water comes out of the two exhaust ports on the rear of the midleg of the motor. If your not sure what has been or not been done to it, then read the following post - Awakening a sleeping outboard http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=158086
and definitly replace the impeller.

How long after motor gets running should i see water coming out of these ports you speak of.????dont forget motor has not run for years,all i get is about 20 seconds then it dies.

No more than 10 - 15 seconds before you should see flow. Definitly change out the impeller just to be safe. Running the motor wout water circulation = major damage.

about getting it running longer, have you clean the carbs and made sure every things up to par in them? also the fuel pump diaphapm has it been changed and how do the check valves look? Hows your spark? i agree change the impeller for piece of mind

Hi Guys
I already changed impeller,carbs seem to be o.k....i am in the process of checking the thermostat, but I can't get the screws out. i will get them out some how... Spark seems o.k. on all 3 too....I am going to check compression today,I will post.I will also check diaphram, since it won't stay running.I just want to thank you all, I am green when it comes to marine engines. First boat w/motor.OOhhh should I change water pump??????

VERY BADDDDDD news, I guess I should have did this test before.....
first compression test 1=105,2=85,3=30--second test 1=115,2=75 and 3=25
what do i do now???????...I have the clymer book. do I look for another motor that runs????fix it?????

well there are a few things to try.. do you have access to compressed air? if so use you compression tester hose and put air and take the plug out of the other low cylinderthe weak cylinder... pressurize to say 70 psi yes the piston might move but what you are trying to assertain is if you have a bad head gasket... so.. say you put your hose onto cylinder tow and presurize, where do you hear air coming from? if no air comes out of hole 3. if not then go out and buy some DEEP Creep.... (read good stuff) and spray into the cylinders with the pison alittle more than half way up.. Spray heavily... you may have to do each cylinder one at a time so as to not loose all the deep creep out the exhaust....
let that set for a day or two and that will help with lossening the carbon in the cylinders and rings...
spin engine without plugs to get rid of the deep creep and recheck compression...if it comes up your golden... if not then youll have to go deeper....
are you sure of your carbs? are they clean? are the floats and needles working and jets clear?.... be careful... the parts are 25 years old and some judicious tlc will go a long way... use wd40 to clean all the crap out of the bowls and such use hard chemicals like carb cleaner sparingly....

Those numbers are real low. You may want to pull the head and inspect the gasket, cylinder walls for scoring, pistons, etc

you say to put 70 psi,,,,in what cylinder???do i put it in 1,then take out 3???please explain again step by step. i am new at this
