4.3 engine backfired and quit running

I have a 1991 mariah 19' with a 4.3. I was driving the boat at just under 30 mph for about 15 mins after i dropped the boat in the water.The boat made a backfire noise and instantly shut down. The engine still turned over like nothing happened but wouldnt fire up. I checked the oil and the oil level and oil is fine. Any ideas? Is it a bad gasket by any chance?

Sounds like a timeing problem....

Check the fuel , firing, and air..............

Thanks for the responses. I talked to a mechanic today and he mentioned the timing also. He recommended that i pull the cap off and check underneath it. I already checked the fuel and air and it has both, im borrowing a timing gun and i'll have to look at the cap. Thanks again
