You can tell me where to find a "earmuff" that will work on a 1982 Johnson Seaking 25HP outboard. The intake holes are right above the cavitation plate and round and rectanle one cover the holes. I'm tired of dragging a 26 gallon trashcan along! Anyone? Shiny penny!

And I'll give you a penny if you can produce a 1982 Sea King made by Johnson. What do you REALLY have?

If it really is a 1982 Johnson 25hp, the water intake is a screen on the leading edge of the exhaust outlet, just aft of the prop. Those holes above the cavitation plate are to let water in when running in reverse. Putting water in them with a hose will only run out the screen previously mentioned.

There was a flushing attachment made many moons ago, but they are very rare these days. It was called a Tempo Flushette. There were several motor-specific models.

And secondly, that is not the lower unit housing from a 1982 model either. Johny/Rudes changed the lower unit design in 1977 to accomodate the typical style of ear muffs better. The style that F_R attached is the typical style dating back to 1949-50. Post a model number to your motor and we can better tell what year it is.

Best way is to put it in a barrel of fresh water.

The 1982 water intke is exactly as I posted earlier. There are 3 ways to flush it:

1. With a vintage Tempo Flushette

2. Put it in a barrel or garbage can full of water.

3. Some people have fabricated a replica of the rectangular plate above the cavitation plate, with a hose adapter. Sort of works if you have a lot of water gushing in.

FR there is nothing ...nada under the cav plate. Nothing like your diagram On top of the cav plate is a horizonal plate w/ screws on each end and 3 holes running parellel on the left side. The holes are maybe a 1/8th inch above the cav plate leaving no room for earmuffs.
The model number is J25ELCNE
Thanks Gregg

Well if there is nothing under there, then you sure have a strange bird. They made them that way for 30 years, from the mid '50s to the mid '80s. I checked the factory parts book for your motor 3 times now, and it sez it is supposed to be there.

Are you telling me it isn't like this?

I am a bonehead. You guys were right. When I looked at FS diagram it looked like a tube of some sort sticking out of the underside of the cav plate.Doh! Well, thanks a million I would never have found that thinking the 3 holes were the intake.
