I ordered a complete water pump kit for my alpha 1 gen 2 outdrive, and never really thought anything of it until i started taking my lower off today and was messing with the pieces when i realized 2 things...

The impeller doesnt fit in the housing

And the hole where the drive shaft goes through the housing is offset from other hole...

This is my first time replacing the water pump system, but did I just get sent the wrong kit, or what... Any help going forwards great...thanks!

The vanes are never straight in the pump. They always have a curve in them.
The changing size of the opening is what makes this a positive displacement pump, and the offset of the shaft is what changes the size of the opening.

you have to fit the impeller into the housing so that the fins are actually curved however make sure they are curved the correct direction it can be tricky. A service manual will show you a picture of it and describe how to put everything in place but double check to make sure you have the correct kit. Hope this helps

Well then thats a good thing!

I was under the impression from the tutorial vids I had watched that the impeller vanes were suppose to be straight.

I've seen a few of those video's that are done by people that have no clue what they are doing, but end up with it working no matter how badly they do the job.

Since you have a gen 2, you either need to buy the alignment pins or get some fine thread bolts and lop the heads off and make your own so you don't shred the gasket upon re-assembly.
After you get the base plate down and the gaskets glued down and the impeller on the shaft (don't forget they woodruf key) All you do is insert your alignent pins in 2 corners, rotate the driveshaft clockwise as you push down on the pump cover until it's seated, and that's it. Put in 2 bolts and torque them down (i do half way). Remove your alignment pins and install the othe 2 bolts and torque them down. Then finnish of the torque on the first 2 bolts.

Just make sure your threads are clean, they get boogered up after a while. I use a gun brush in the end of a cordless drill followed by some compressed air and a smudge of perfectseal on the threads if the threads are not to bad. If the threads are awefull you'll need to tap them.

Do those directions change since I have a counter-rotating?

Nope, the vertical shaft always turns clockwise, counter rotating or not.
