being new to boating...and already knowing you dont have spark is pretty good...but i have to ask, how do you know you dont have spark??

I'd be sure b attery is 100% charged, motor needs 300rpm of cranking to charge ingnition coils, be sure you have good clean feul..

wow thanks for the quick info guys, I used my magnetic field indicator and I had nothing at the coils or powerpack. I also used a spark plug tester to confirm spark issue in case my coil checker was faulty..

a magnetic field indicator?..what did you use a geigercounter or metal ditector? hahahaha thats a first..

but seriously, its good to see you dug right in.. as far as spark testers go..they make a nice inline tester that glows in pulses as the spark occurs. its handy if your doing this by yourself..

Make sure that battery is fully charged. put the spark tester on and give her some cranks..if she is spinnig fast enough and magnets under the flywheel are doing what they do then you should see something happen..

if you do not get spark then you want to start at the cheaper fixes..the coils that feed each spark plug..and keep moving up..

Also, if you know how or have the manual for your engne, you might want to take the flywheel off and inspect the magnet (doughnut) that is under it..if it rust you can clean it up...if you see any cracks then you will want to replae that assembly.

rock on!

the lanyard switch is usualy by the key switch or in some cases at the throttle lever...it will have a lanyard or cord that attches to a pinned switch..in the event you go over board, this mechanism is suppossed to pull out and stop the boat..

you may or may not have on..

Re: newbie needs help asap

PS..the link is self explanitory..just click on the year folder, then hp, then your model...

its nice to see the exploded view of your engine components..also if you click on the numbers in the diagram, it will scroll the bottom to that part number and discription.. you can then search online or here for the part you need...

hope that helps

Re: newbie needs help asap

for some reason I think its the stator under the flywheel, I know I shouldn't jump the gun. I don't have a manual for this motor. Is there a how-to for this procedure? I will check other things before this but would like to have a plan b if I don't find anything
