Throttle adjustment

How do I adjust my throttle control (Mercontrol) so the (new) cable moves about 3/4"-1" more when I put the throttle forward? I can either have speed, or a nice low idle on mine, but not both unless I can figure out a way to accomplish this.

Re: Throttle adjustment

Im having the same issue with my mercury 65hp. Ive tried adjusting the barrel on the cable but cant find a balance point in low idle and WOT. I'm starting to think its something missing/wornout in my mercontrol box. Someone on here should have a solution for us.

Re: Throttle adjustment

I'm wondering if I could just modify the lever a bit so the cable could connect a little higher on the lever so when it is all the way forward it has pulled the cable further, but still rests at a low idle in neutral?

Sounds too easy to work but I have hope it will be as simple as that.

Re: Throttle adjustment

There is no adjustment, however, the MerConrols have much more range than necessary, when they work properly.

Doyou have them set properly? Disconnect throttle cable at motor. Put throttle handle in neutral. adjust barrel nut to push throttle closed with a bit of preload. That should do it. The Mercontrol should allow throttle handle to hit the "8PM spot", which should be more than enough to advance the motor to full throttle.

Re: Throttle adjustment

The adjustments on throttle and shift cables DO NOT adjust for the amount of "throw" on the cable. They merely adjust for cable length which is not the same concept. The proper adjustment is to disconnect the cable at the engine. Place the engine linkage in neutral and the throttle fully closed. Place the control box lever in neutral. Now bring the attachement point on the cable up to the attachment point on the engine. If they don't line up exactly, adjust the barrel as required. Now attach the cable. DO NOT move anything in the process. If you cannot attach the cable without moving the linkage you have not adjusted the barrel enough. If you attempt to get more throw in one direction you decrease throw in the opposite direction. It is plain and simple physics.

Before making throttle (or shift cable) adjustments, you must ensure the link&sync procedure has been properly done. Then the proper cable adjustment is to disconnect the cable at the engine. I am aware how it's supposed to be adjusted. That is how it was set up. The result was the motor never got anywhere near WOT. Not enough travel on the cable.

The pivot point on the throttle lever stays the same ans does the distance it travels. The point at which you connect the cable to that lever will make more or less travel of the cable for a given distance the lever travels. Also, rather simple. The neutral point stays nearly the same no mater where you connect it because the lever is straight up and down at the neutral point. As the lever goes forward the farther away from the pivot point the cable is attached, the farther the cable will travel. Am I missing something? Seems amazingly obvious and childishly simple.

Re: Throttle adjustment

Did you match up the old cable against the new cable and see if they both moved out of the casing the same amount before installing the new cable? Could be that the new cable is 1 inch shorter than the old one when it comes to the movement. Could be that the new cable is for the newer control if you are using the old control with a warm up lever. JMO
