Need help Bad

I have a 20hp 20rl71 that runs great + electric start ,new fuel pump rebuilt carb but it jumps in and out of gear like you hit a stump......I have a 69r 20hp johnson pull start that does not run can I use to whole lower unit off the 69 on the 71 they appear to look the same. Any advice really appreciated Joe G

simple answer is,as long as the driveshaft splines are the same,the water tube aligns up and the bolt holes are the same ,try it.My gut feeling is they are interchanagable,but there were changes over certain periods of time.give it a shot.its just labor.

I am not sure if they are interchangeable, but they appear to be different parts altogether

Yes, the lower units will interchange, as long as the driveshaft lengths are the same. The '71 model number indicates a long shaft, the '69 a short shaft. Easy enough to swap out the shafts, though, if needed. Might be a good time to replace the waterpump impeller while you're at it - cheap insurance!
