I posted a wanted AD on craig's list for an old Evinrude motor that needed some work.

I got the following email today (no pictures were sent):

I've got an early to mid 50's 7.5 HP Evinrude outboard Fleettwin. The engine is siezed, but the rest of it is in great shape. It's pretty much what you're looking for. I was going to keep it and fix it, but ran into some car problems today that I need to get fixed. I'm not looking to get rich, but make me an offer. I don't have pics on here, but I can take some with my cell and send them to your cell. You're more than welcome to come look at it....I need it gone, so that I can get my car fixed

I called the seller and was told the motor sat in his grandfather's shed for many years and the pistons are seized up. The seller also stated that cosmetically, the motor looks great.

I asked what he wanted for it and the seller stated he will take $50 dollars. It's a 30 minute drive to the seller's house. Should I take the gamble for $50 and see if I can bring this engine back to life?

It might be toast if it's seized. You could try and strip it down and soak the power head to try and free it up. But it will take work. Are you looking for a project? It will take work. It's up to you if you want to learn on it.

Quite often if they seize due to sitting they are not too hard to free up, but if they seize due to moisture intrusion you're usually outta luck.

I wanted a junk motor to practice on but, I want it to be "fixable". Any visual clues to look for while inspecting the power head?

See if you can turn the flywheel even a tiny amount. If you can, it is the pistons that are froze and that isn't the end of the world. But if the crank and rods are froze, it is like toast.

You also might remove the spark plugs and look at the end. If they are full of rust, toast.

Everything is 'fixable', it just depends on how much time and $$$ you wanna put into it! :)

I find taking apart seized engines helps the general outboard knowledge a lot!

I made plans with the seller to look at it this Friday.

If the engine is completely toast, what is it worth? What is a good counter offer? I may still take it for learning purposes.

I just freed up the pistons on a '57 Gale 12hp. It involved tearing down the
motor completely. I had to tap out the pistons from underneath. This was after
continual soaking with PB Blaster. The good news is it just needs new rings,
along with all new gaskets, coils, condensers, etc.
There is no profit here. It's an education. You're saving an old motor. Give it
a try, if it's toast, part it out. GH
