testing thermostat?

how can I test a thermostat on a mercruiser 120? can I do it like you would with a car and drop it in boiling water?

You start with a pan of cold water and a thermometer, watch when it starts to open

If it's in question, just replace it, they're dirt cheap and not worth the time to test.

imho, i think it's worth the time because it either confirms it was the problem or eliminates it as a possible problem.

I agree 100%. Plus, mine set me back $25. To me, that's not exactly "dirt cheap!"

You could but why bother. They're cheap and you're gonna have it off anyway. Replace it and it will be good a long while.

I guess some of you have never gotten a bad Tstat out of the box, for the extra 5 minutes it takes to test it and make sure, just test it.
