I just installed a re-manufactured long block. It seems to run and idle fine but when we took it out on the water to test it it has no power past 2k RPMs in fact it wants to back fire a bit and sound like a carb when it floods out. I looked in the manual I have for it and it indicated that the timing would adjust automatically. When I installed the distributor I did so at TDC and then expected the computer to take over. There are instructions to manually override the computer to retime; does anyone have any ideas? Also the plug gap in the book calls for .40 while the spark arrestor calls for .45; would that make a big enough difference, they are gapped at .40.

Ayuh,... You have to set the base timing, it's explained in the Manual, which you'll find posted in the Adults Only section at the top of this forum...

It sounds like the motors Not getting proper gas flow... Filters,..?? Fuelpump,..??

Marc, the computer will ADVANCE the timing automatically, but only after you SET the initial timing. You need to look up Base Timing Mode in the manual as Bond-o says.

I need to look at this same manual as I have a 1996 black scorpion 5.7 MPI that has a timing issue and I need to set base timing. does anyone know the correct procedure or what manual number I need to look at?

The normal consumer 1996 350's would be covered by #17. Somethings will probably apply, but would recommend buying the specific Black Scorpion service manual.
I have one from a 6.2L Black Scorpion that I picked up from ebay, just for tech info. #24 might have more up-to-date gen+ (vortec) info.
