Hello all,

I was wondering... I saw the price of the outboard specific gear oil, 80w 90 gear oil, and was wondering if there is much of a difference between it and the regular 80w 90 gear oil you can buy?

Thanks,
Bill

outboard stuff has additives incase of water intrusion.

Price a new lower unit and the couple extra dollars for the marine oil will seem like quite a deal.

As TD said, the marine oil is specifically made to deal with water intrusion, but yes the base oil is the same, trust me, you won't be saving any money.

Given that the marine grade oil is better,

If I have a lower end that I know will have water in it every time I take the boat out, and I will be changing out the oil quite frequently, is it worth it to use the better, marine specific oil?

I know, I know...fix the leaks in the lower end, it's cheaper over the long run. Another post for another day...

Thanks,
Bill

Yes, LU lube will still be better because it emulsifies the water homogenously and retains some lubrication ability. Std gear oil will just separate into oil on water, and that water layer will not lube.

Use Walmart Supertech LU lube. It's cheap.

Thanks, and that's a darn good article on gear lubes. Guess there's a lot more to it than most folks think. I change my gear oil once a year and it always looks just the same coming out as it did going in, and never any bad odors. Guess that means everything is O.K.!

You might be interested in this article where different gear oils, including Hypoid 90, were tested with and without water in them

Maybe there's something wrong with my browser, but do you guys get "blow ups" of those graphs when you mouse over them?

The way I see that page, the graphs are so tiny I cannot read anything on them.

I can't get the graphs to enlarge either, they must want you to buy the magazine to see everything.

I found the back issue in the public library to read
